MENTAL ILLNESS IS ON THE RISE

Depression and suicide is on the rise and only 50% of Americans are getting the help they need. More than ever before people of all races are suffering from serious psychological distress and there is a shortage of mental health professionals and … No One is Talking About It.

Recently, my heart has ached hearing about individuals taking their lives (30% in the last 20 years and the 2nd leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 24). It is unfortunate that none of us, even those around us every day whom seem to appear strong and tough are immune to anxiety, depression or loss of hope, and … No One is Talking About It.

Today we live in a society where constant noise from the internet and social media are serving to pump up people’s emotions, anxiety and worry about their families and the state of the world. We text, email, post on FB and tweet, and the rising levels of loneliness are contributed partly to the overuse of social media. We fear rejection, ridicule, and judgement. We fear sharing our struggles and … No One Is Talking About It.

Yesteryears we could leave work and go home and had family to talk to, meetup with friends to talk and sort out circumstances and return home to rest and sleep with peace. Today nothing is being turned off or turned down and there is no downtime to recharge and get one’s bearings straight again and … No One Is Talking About It.

While you are out and about today stop, look and listen. Talk openly about your own experience of Mental Illness or that of your family. If you sense someone is struggling, have the courage to ask them how they’re doing. Put yourself in their shoes and try not to judge, but to extend the compassion they need. If you are struggling I encourage you, with all my heart, to reach out, and keep faith that hope exists no matter how dark life may feel right now.
